Our Story

The United Church of Northern India Trust Association (UCNITA) was established to provide a permanent legal and administrative framework for managing the temporal affairs and properties connected with the work of the United Church of Northern India.

The Association was formally incorporated on 9 March 1939 under the Indian Companies Act, 1913, and registered in Bombay. Its incorporation provided a legally recognized corporate body capable of holding property, managing institutions, and acting as trustee for the Church and its affiliated bodies.

Memorandum Of Association UCNITA

From its inception, the Trust Association was designed to function as a corporate trustee, ensuring that the assets and institutions associated with the Church could be legally held, protected, administered, and utilized for the advancement of the Church’s mission and charitable work.

Origins and Historical Context

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Protestant missions and churches in Northern India expanded rapidly. Churches, schools, hospitals, mission residences, and other institutions were established across various regions of the country.

However, many of these properties and institutions required a stable legal entity capable of holding and administering assets in a consistent and secure manner. The formation of the United Church of Northern India Trust Association addressed this need by creating a corporate body responsible for managing property and institutional resources on behalf of the Church.

The Trust Association thus became the legal custodian of property and institutional assets, enabling the Church’s spiritual and social ministries to operate with stability and legal protection.

Incorporation and Legal Foundation

The Memorandum of Association defined the objectives and authority of the Trust. Among its principal purposes were:

• Acting as trustee or agent for the United Church of Northern India
• Acquiring and managing movable and immovable property
• Establishing and supporting churches, educational institutions, hospitals, and other charitable works
• Administering funds and resources for the benefit of the Church’s mission

These provisions ensured that the Trust Association could operate as the legal and administrative arm responsible for safeguarding church property and institutional assets.

The Association’s structure was designed in accordance with the provisions of the Companies Act of the time, with a Committee of Management responsible for governance and administration.

Role in Supporting the Mission of the Church

Since its establishment, the United Church of Northern India Trust Association has served as an important institutional framework supporting the work of the Church throughout Northern India.

The Association has historically been responsible for holding and administering properties used for:

• Churches and mission congregations
• Educational institutions such as schools and colleges
• Medical institutions including hospitals and dispensaries
• Mission residences and community facilities
• Charitable and social service institutions

By providing a legally recognized structure for property management and institutional oversight, the Trust Association has played a vital role in ensuring that the resources entrusted to the Church are used for the advancement of its spiritual, educational, and charitable mission.

Governance and Administration

The governance of the Association has historically been entrusted to a Committee of Management, which is responsible for administering the affairs of the Trust in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association.

The Committee oversees matters relating to property administration, financial management, institutional oversight, and legal responsibilities connected with the Trust.

Through this governance structure, the Association ensures that the assets held in trust are managed responsibly and in accordance with the objectives for which the Trust was established.

Continuing Legacy

For more than eight decades, the United Church of Northern India Trust Association has served as a foundational institutional body connected with the work of the United Church of Northern India.

Its legal framework, established in 1939, continues to provide the basis for responsible stewardship of property and institutional resources connected with the Church’s mission.

As the Church continues its work in worship, education, service, and community engagement, the Trust Association remains committed to its historic purpose of safeguarding and administering the assets entrusted to it for the advancement of these objectives.
